नदियों में जल्द ही बर्फ पिघल जाती है, जलवायु परिवर्तन के कारण, ग्लेशियर अक्सर पिघलते हैं। शोधकर्ताओं ने ग्लेशियरों पर प्रभाव और बर्फ की पिघलने की गति आदि पर कई अध्ययन किए हैं। लेकिन, पहली बार नदियों में जमी बर्फ पर जलवायु परिवर्तन के प्रभावों का अध्ययन किया गया है।

सबसे बड़ी गिरावट तिब्बती पठार, पूर्वी यूरोप और अलास्का पर पाई गई थी। शोधकर्ताओं ने पाया कि ग्लोबल वार्मिंग के साथ नदियों में बर्फ जमने में कमी जारी रहने की संभावना है।

जलवायु परिवर्तन के कारण पक्षी प्रवास में वृद्धि

शोधकर्ताओं ने भविष्य के मॉडल का उपयोग करते हुए 2009-20 और 2080–2100 के बीच नदियों की बर्फबारी की तुलना की है। परिणाम बताते हैं कि उत्तरी गोलार्ध ने सर्दियों के महीनों में 9 से 15 प्रतिशत और वसंत में 12 से 68 प्रतिशत की गिरावट का अनुभव किया। रॉकी पर्वत, उत्तरपूर्वी अमेरिका, पूर्वी यूरोप और तिब्बती पठार गिरने की सबसे अधिक संभावना है। शोधकर्ताओं ने कहा कि इस अध्ययन से पता चलता है कि जलवायु परिवर्तन के कारण हमारा ग्रह कैसे बदल जाएगा।
